About Onja

Onja is a social enterprise training underprivileged youth into world-class software developers.

We find the brightest students in Madagascar who can’t afford to continue their education, and train them in English language and software development. After just two-and-a-half years they are ready to work as remote front-end software developers in international tech teams.

Once in a job, our developers earn a good salary that helps them support their families and pay forward the opportunity to a new wave of students. They unlock exciting careers that fulfil their potential, and accelerate the development of their nation (see ‘How Onja Works’ below).

Our first cohort, ‘Wave 1’, consists of nineteen talented and committed graduates who are now working remotely for our partner companies in Europe and the US. With this immensely successful first cohort, and a proven social model, our goal is now to scale our impact: we aim to take on 360 new students over the next four years.

Our fast-growing team is very united, committed to the mission, and hardworking, but we also maintain a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere that you'll find everywhere in Madagascar.

Onja is in Toamasina, a lively city with beautiful beaches, nice restaurants, and plenty to do and see. Toamasina is Madagascar’s second largest city (population 300,000) yet is surrounded by plenty of natural beauty, and even has a national park nearby.

About the role

We’re looking for a Sales Officer to help us grow our international client base.

You’ll be part of a small, fast-moving team scaling from a handful of clients to dozens — helping place 90+ developers per year with tech companies around the world.

This is a sales-focused, purpose-driven role. You’ll identify and reach out to potential clients, build genuine relationships, run smart outreach campaigns, and make sure no opportunity slips through the cracks.

If you’re proactive, self-motivated, and love connecting with people and achieving results — this is your chance to help build something big while changing lives.

We believe in hiring based on potential, attitude and cultural fit rather than specific qualifications.

What You'll Do:

  • Identify and reach out to potential clients (mainly in Europe and the US).
  • Build authentic relationships through personalised email and LinkedIn outreach.
  • Write clear, compelling messages that start conversations and drive interest.
  • Follow up consistently — own every lead until it’s either won or clearly lost.
  • Keep our CRM clean and up-to-date so every opportunity is tracked.
  • Analyse what’s working and continuously improve outreach performance.
  • Prepare proposals and contracts using our standard templates (training provided).
  • Support client communications, meetings, renewals, and other relationship touchpoints.
  • Collaborate with marketing to improve developer profiles and outreach materials.
  • Suggest and test new strategies to enhance our client acquisition systems.

Who You Are

  • Motivated: You love setting goals and delivering results.
  • Communicative: You write and speak clearly in English (B2 level or higher).
  • Organised: You track every lead, follow up reliably, and manage details well.
  • Curious: You learn new tools and processes quickly and enjoy improving systems.
  • People-focused: You genuinely enjoy connecting with others and earning trust.
  • Analytical: You’re comfortable working with data and tracking performance.
  • Independent: You take ownership, act on initiative, and thrive in a growing organisation.
  • Bonus: experience in sales, business development, or outreach (LinkedIn/email) is helpful but not required.

Candidates can anticipate that reference checks will be conducted as part of our thorough evaluation process.

Why work with us
  • Work for a mission that matters — every client you bring in funds new training and transforms lives.
  • Be part of an English-speaking, international team that values learning, ownership, and results.
  • Launch your career in one of the most valuable global skillsets — sales and growth. You’ll master modern client acquisition, CRM tools, and relationship-building strategies. A skillset that companies around the world always hire for.
  • After a few years at Onja, you’ll have the skills, experience, and confidence to succeed in any fast-growing company, anywhere — while having made a tangible social impact.
  • Clear growth path inside Onja as we scale — from contributor to leading global client acquisition.

How Onja Works

Onja is a social enterprise with a sustainable model:

  • Search for brilliant minds who would otherwise be limited to low-paid, unfulfilling careers.
  • Students receive two years of English and software development instruction. Meet a developer here: https://onja.org/blog
  • Graduates earn (and continue learning) at our outsourcing enterprise.
  • All profits are used to train the next wave of students and the cycle begins again

We want our recruitment process to be fair and inclusive, so please do let us know if there are any reasonable adjustments we can make. For example, if you are neurodivergent, we can accommodate and discuss modifications to our hiring process with you.
