What is Onja’s legal status?
Onja is a social enterprise. We define this as an organisation that uses the tools of enterprise to achieve their goals, which are primarily social. A social enterprise can be registered under a charity or a company structure. Onja is registered as a charity in New Zealand and as a Non Government Organisation in Madagascar.
We chose to adopt a charity structure to ensure our primary responsibility is always to our mission, and not to owners or shareholders. As a charity we can still make a profit, however, all profit must be reinvested into furthering our mission: to train more underprivileged students.
Under this structure, Onja does not have owners. Instead we have a board of trustees who have overall management responsibility and who seek to ensure the organisation and team are meeting the mission.
